At the Intersection of Art & Faith
“Artists love to immerse themselves in chaos in order to put it into form, just as God created form out of chaos in Genesis. Forever unsatisfied with the mundane, the apathetic, the conventional, they always push on to newer worlds.” — Rollo May
Swooping naves, intimate cloisters, glistening stained glass windows: if there’s one thing religious architecture never skimps on, it’s drama. So it’s no surprise that art galleries often find a home in churches, monasteries and seminaries to elevate their works.
At Journey of Faith, we’re embracing what it might mean to see a scripture in art as God’s living Word. So, we’re inviting you to browse our viewing room for an artist’s interpretation of a Biblical scripture passage.
The gospel of Christ may be more personal for the visual creatives among us simply because the gallery exists. If works of art in a church gallery can point the artist or the observer to consider Christ, then perhaps the gospel message can penetrate the visual world and hearts.
One artist, we approached to display his work in the church’s gallery expressed his long-standing skepticism toward the Christianity of his youth, but also “hoped to reconcile his faith with his art.”
Take a few moments to pay attention to how you respond to – or react against the way in which God speaks to this holy union of art and faith in you. You may discover or rediscover who God is and how deep His love is for you.
