The Faith Story: Raw Edges Revel

for Nancy

Carefully stitch
press and fold under
raw edges before hemming
or else they will ravel

Ravel cross threads to create a fringe
first stitch a reinforcing row
by machine
half an inch or so from the edge

Is raveled a metaphor
for virus’ hot breath
that snatches dreams away
obliterates calendars
frays social fabric
splits, rips
tears it asunder/

Or is unraveled?

It doesn’t matter
‘disentangles’ defines both
according to the dictionary—
nothing matters

until an artist takes up her palette
swirls stray threads
colors of mercy and grace
into strands of hope
